BEHAVIOUR and DISCIPLINE POLICY 

 

RATIONALE

 

In order that the academy may function as a cohesive unit, teachers must be aware of the general aims of the school, the code of conduct and set ground rules for expectations of behaviour and conduct of our pupils with regard to discipline inherent in the academy ethos.

 

We encourage our pupils to behave sensibly, considerately and courteously at all times. We try to foster the control which stems from concern for the task in hand and awareness for the needs of others, rather than purely authoritarian control. More specifically, each child should learn to be aware of himself and his effect on others, acquire a set of moral values, be able to make and hold moral judgments and develop habits of self discipline and acceptable behaviour.

 

 

STATEMENTS and OBJECTIVES

 

The following statements are the major principles underlying the discipline policy in our academy :-

 

·      It is important to place emphasis on the positive as well as the negative.

 

·      It must be justly and reasonably applied and be sensitive.

 

·      Prevention is better than cure.

 

·      It must take account of the child’s problems or difficulties. e.g., the reasons.

 

·      It is important to have a long and varied list of sanctions on the grounds that it is not reasonable to reach the ultimate sanction too soon.

 

·      Whatever the sanction imposed , it should not be overused.

 

·      Earlier sanctions should not be bypassed so that there is always the next step to fall back on.

 

·      Staff should not issue threats that leave them or more senior staff room for manouvre.

 

·      It is essential that in all disciplinary action that the child understands fully that it is the behaviour which is not acceptable - not him or her as a person.

 

·      If the behaviour is serious or persistent , records should be kept.

 

The academy has a very clear code of conduct which gives the children ten targets for their behaviour and actions around school. It gives a very strong message of our high expectations from our pupils. It should be referred to by all staff on a regular basis and is displayed all around the academy.

 

The forms of behaviour we wish to encourage are :-

 

·      Children moving about the academy in a quiet and safe manner.

 

·      To listen and look whenever the teacher or other adult is speaking to them.

 

·      Never forgetting to use appropriate manners.

 

·      Taking care of the academy and property.

 

·      Keeping their classrooms and cloakrooms tidy.

 

·      Good behaviour expectations are met in assembly.

 

·      To behave in a sensible manner when outside on the playground.

 

·      To think of others and care for them.

 

·      To try their best at all times.

 

 

The forms of behaviour we wish to discourage are :-

 

·      Interrupting other people’s conversations.

 

·      Shouting and swearing at each other.

 

·      Bullying - see separate policy on this for strict guidelines.

 

·      Aggressive behaviour, e.g. Biting, spitting, kicking and punching

 

·      Playground games causing distress, damage or likely to cause an injury.

 

·      Fighting with each other.

 

·      Dropping litter, leaving things generally untidy.

 

·      Vandalism.

 

·      Disruptive behaviour in any form which stops others from learning.

 

 

MANAGING PUPIL BEHAVIOUR

 

All adults should recognise that certain occasions and events during the academy day offer  a challenge to children in their choice of behaviour. Where these events can be anticipated, they should be managed in such a way as to minimize the opportunity for negative behaviour.

 

All staff have equal and shared responsibility for the management of all pupils.

 

Supervisory and administrative staff should be viewed by pupils as having the same status as teaching staff in responding to pupil behaviour.

 

Non-teaching staff will have the same expectations of pupils as teachers and will apply the same rewards and sanctions. In this way, their authority will be more easily recognised, rather than somebody to be exploited because different rules apply. It is imperative that the children see no difference between the head, the teachers and non-teachers in the expectations of behaviour, the way discipline is applied and the use of rewards and sanctions.

 

The separate supervision policy sets down clear and strict rules for the children when they are at play or in the classrooms and should be read and implemented in conjunction with this policy.

 

 

REWARDS and SANCTIONS

 

The following general principals apply when rewards and sanctions are to be used :-

 

·      Praise and reinforcement should be used as often as possible to encourage positive behaviour. Sanctions are to be used sparingly in order for them to have their shock effect.

 

·      As far as possible, teachers will resolve their own pupil management issues themselves within their own classrooms. There is attached to this policy, guidelines for the use of rewards and certificates. Sweets and things to eat are not to be used as rewards as this does not reflect the school health policy and there is the risk of allergic reaction.

 

·      If a child is to work in a class other than his/her own, this should be done after prior agreement of the receiving teacher and then only on rare occasions.

 

·      Very rarely should a child be sent to the headteacher without the head being appraised of the circumstances. The headteacher should only be used where the behaviour is severe and other pupils learning or safety are compromised as it will appear to the child that the teacher can not deal with them.

 

·      Academic work should never be used as a sanction. This prevents the development of the positive work ethic.

 

·      If sanctions need to imposed at break times, then child may be asked to accompany the teacher of dinner lady on duty so close observation can be kept or the child is kept inside for the break outside the heads office.

 

·      Staff should ensure that any sanctions do not reward the child for inappropriate behaviour. e.g. the child does not end up with his/her desired outcome as a result of their misbehaviour.

 

·      Teacher should use professional judgment and discretion when applying sanctions.

 

·      It is essential if a sanction is applied to a child, it is carried out. This is vital so constancy and fairness can be seen by all.

 

·      Parents will be informed of the child’s persistent behaviour and kept informed of further developments. If no change after an individual sanction programme is put in place then suspension will result.

 

MONITORING and EVALUATION

 

This policy concerns the protection of the children in our care and will be implemented rigorously. It is the headteacher’s responsibility to ensure that it is implemented successfully and fairly. The staff and trust body will review the policy annually and the procedures that take place following an incident of bad behaviour. High expectations of our pupils are vital at all times. The Trust may choose this policy as a focus for their monitoring during one of their monitoring weeks.

 

 

This policy was agreed by all staff and the Trust body. It will be reviewed and issued to the parents on an annual basis.
